AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity are absorbing queries that used to produce clicks. Here is a practical framework for staying visible.
The shift in how people search
For two decades, search visibility meant one thing: ranking in the list of blue links. That list is now frequently pushed below an AI-generated answer — or replaced by a conversation with an assistant that never shows a list at all.
This doesn't mean SEO is dead. It means the surface area of visibility has expanded. You now need to be present in the classic results, in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and in the answers that ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity generate.
Why classic rankings aren't enough
When an AI Overview appears, studies consistently show a drop in clicks to the pages ranking beneath it. If your page ranks #1 but isn't cited in the overview, you lose visibility for that query even though your 'ranking' hasn't changed.
AI assistants add a second problem: they synthesize an answer and often name a short list of options. If your brand isn't in the model's understanding of your category, you're simply absent from that list.
The four levers of AI visibility
Across dozens of engagements, four levers consistently move AI visibility:
- Entity clarity — a consistent, unambiguous representation of your brand across the web and in knowledge graphs.
- Extractable content — answer-first structure, clear definitions, lists, tables and specific data that AI systems can lift.
- Third-party validation — mentions and citations in trusted publications, which AI engines lean on heavily.
- Crawler access — making sure GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended can actually reach and render your content.
How to measure it
You can't manage what you don't measure. Build a fixed, versioned set of prompts that reflect how buyers actually ask about your category, then run them on a schedule across the major engines and record whether you're mentioned, cited or recommended — and which competitors appear.
This is sample-based measurement, not a live feed from the AI vendors, and it should be labeled as such. But run consistently, it gives you a reliable trend line.
A 90-day starting plan
If you're starting from zero, sequence it like this:
- Weeks 1–2: audit crawler access, fix blocks, publish llms.txt, baseline your AI visibility.
- Weeks 3–6: restructure your 10 most important pages for extraction; add FAQ and definition blocks and schema.
- Weeks 7–12: launch one genuine data study or original research asset and pitch it for coverage.
